Are you replacing the pump on your spa and need to rotate the wet end to match your original pump setup? Don't worry, we've got you covered. In this guide, we'll walk you through 5 simple steps to help you rotate the wet end on your hot tub pump. Understanding the importance of aligning the wet end correctly will ensure smooth water circulation and prevent any potential issues.
Let's begin.
What Is the Wet End on a Spa Pump?
The wet end on a spa pump refers to the section that connects the hydraulic and electrical parts. It plays a vital role in preventing leaks and ensuring proper water flow. It is located between the shaft and the pump body. It is a key component of the water filtration system in your hot tub.
Why Should You Rotate the Wet End of Your Hot Tub Pump?
Rotating the wet end of your hot tub pump is sometimes needed when installing or replacing your pump. It ensures that the position of the wet end aligns with the water discharge position on your spa. Depending on the model, hot tubs may have either center or side discharge configurations.
By examining the water discharge on your spa, you can determine the correct position for the wet end.
Most spa pumps have 3 possible wet end positions, often called discharge positions: top left horizontal, top right vertical, and top right horizontal.

How to Rotate the Wet End on Your Pump in 5 Easy Steps
Step 1: Gather the Required Tools
To rotate the wet end on your spa pump, you'll need either a nut driver or a socket wrench. The specific tool size depends on the frame of your pump. For a 48 frame pump, a ¼ inch nut driver or socket wrench is needed, while a 56 frame pump requires a 5/16 inch nut driver or socket wrench.
You can typically find this information on the ID plate of your pump, or by measuring the spacing between the through bolts. A 48 frame pump typically has less than 4 inches between the bolts, while a 56 frame pump has a spacing of more than 4 inches.
Step 2: Loosen the Bolts Securing the Wet End
Begin by gently loosening the 4 through bolts that secure the wet end onto your hot tub pump. These bolts are located at the back of the motor.
Be careful not to remove the bolts all the way out. Unscrew them until flush. Make sure you don’t fully remove them.
Step 3: Pull and Rotate the Wet End
Next, pull the wet end away from the motor while holding onto the motor with one hand. Rotate it to the desired position.
Step 4: Align the Wet End with the Spa Pump
Once in the correct position, line up the female threading of the brass inserts on the wet end with the through bolts.
Step 5: Secure the Wet End by Reattaching the Bolts
At the back of the motor, push the 4 through bolts back until they touch the wet end. Use a nut driver or socket wrench to screw the bolts back into the inserts on the wet end. Take care not to overtighten them; this could damage the wet end.
Congratulations! Your wet end is now properly positioned and ready to be installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Does a Wet End Work?
The wet end contains a key moving part called the impeller. Powered by the motor, the impeller propels water in the water circulation system of your spa.
It helps maintain clean filtration and overall quality of the water of your hot tub. It is a key component of your spa pump.
What Is the Difference Between a Wet End and a Dry End on a Pump?
A pump in a spa consists of two main parts: the wet end and the dry end. The wet end houses the impeller, which is responsible for moving water through the hot tub. On the other hand, the dry end contains the electric motor that drives the impeller.
While water flows through the wet end, the dry end remains separate from the water and does not come into direct contact with it.
What Happens If the Wet End of the Spa Pump Is Not in the Right Position?
If the wet end of your spa pump is not in the right position, the water will not be able to flow properly through the plumbing and jets of your hot tub. It must be aligned in the right position to properly function.
