- Anti-Microbial or Microban, Anti-Bacterial: Solution blend that is added to spa cartridges during the manufacturing process to prevent/slow the growth of harmful microorganisms. The Microban blend is great at keeping bacteria, algae and mold from penetrating the cartridge. It will also aid in extending the lifespan and filtering quality. Anti-Microbial cartridge material is sometimes (but not always) blue in color for easy identification.
- Cartridge or Spa Filter Cartridge: Usually cylindrical in shape, a filter cartridges is a disposable item found inside skimmers and spa filters. They are designed to filter the water by catching and holding large and small particulates from the water. Cartridges consist of 4 main parts, top, bottom, core, and pleated fabric. They are available in many different sizes, square footages, styles, and applications.
- Closed or Closed Top, Closed Bottom: When referring to a spa filter cartridge, the term “Closed” pertains to the style of the top of the cartridge. Closed simply means that there is solid plastic covering the area, and that no holes, or threading etc. are present. The label usually precedes or is followed by “Top” (Exp. Top: Closed).
- Diameter or Cartridge Diameter: One of two main measurements used to identify filter cartridges. Measure a straight line through the center between two opposite edges of the circular top or bottom.
- Filter: A Hot Tub Filter is a Partially or fully enclosed piece of spa equipment. Not to be confused with a Filter Cartridge, it is a normally plastic body with inlet and discharge plumbing attached. The body of the filter will contain the filter cartridge. Water enters the filter, moves through the cartridge, and then back out to the body of water.
- FPT or Female Pipe Thread: NPT Pipe Thread…
- Handle or String Handle, Bar Handle, Semi Circular Handle, Knob Handle: When referring to a spa filter cartridge, the term “Handle” pertains to the style of the top of the cartridge. The handle is designed to aid in installation and removal. They can be quite useful with cartridges that thread or twist lock into the filter or skimmer. There are many styles available, including String, Bar, Semi-Circular, and Knob.
- Keyed or Open with slots, Twist lock: Style of filter cartridge bottom. Open hole with an extra slot on either side. This style of the bottom is designed to lock into an adapter or specially-made skimmer or filter. This style bottom is available in many sizes, be sure to measure the diameter of the main hole carefully.
- Micron: A micron is a unit of linear measurement in the metric system. It’s used to measure the distance from one point to another. Regarding spa filter cartridges, micron ratings are used to identify the size of particulates the filter is capable of trapping. Cartridges with lower numbered micron ratings, will filter out smaller particles, resulting in cleaner water.
- MPT or Male Pipe Thread: See "NPT Pipe Thread"
- NPT or National Pipe Thread: U.S. national technical standards for screw threads used on threaded pipes and pipe fittings. This is the most common threading used in the United States.
- Open or Open Top, Open Bottom: When referring to a spa filter cartridge, the term “Open” pertains to the style of either the top or the bottom of the cartridge. Open simply means that there is a large hole present, and usually precedes or is followed by a measurement of the hole and will include whether it's referring to the top or bottom. (Exp. Top: Open, 2-1/8”)
- SAE or SAE Thread, Course Thread: Type of threading found on certain types of spa filter cartridges. SAE threading is spread wider apart than NPT. The threading is thicker and usually square in shape. Sometimes referred to as "Course Threads".
- Square Footage or sqft, Sq. Ft.: Measurement of “Effective Filtration Area” of the spa filter. This measurement pertains to the filtration media itself. A filter cartridge is made up of several feet of folded polyester cloth or paper material. The area measurement of this material determines the square footage rating. The larger the cartridge, the higher the square footage.
