Glossary
- 120v or 115v, 110v: 120V is the AC voltage on a single hot wire in a circuit. As the power runs through wires or extension cords, the measured voltage may drop to 115v or 110v, however, all 3 ratings represent the same single hot wire circuit.
- 240v or 230v, 220v: 230v is the AC voltage on a 2-hot wire circuit. As the power runs through the wires, the measured voltage may drop to 230v or 220v. However, all 3 ratings represent the same 2-hot wire circuit.
- Backflow: In water or air plumbing, can be defined as an unwanted flow in the reverse direction.
- Check Valve or CV: A valve or fitting designed to allow water or air to flow in one direction only. Can prevent backflow through the plumbing.
- Corona Discharge Ozone or CD: Type of process that uses a high voltage electrical charge to convert oxygen molecules into ozone gas for pools or spas.
- Hartford Loop: Technique used in plumbing hydraulics. Occurs when a small section of plumbing between two points is installed above the elevation of both points then back down. This causes an air gap which can prevent static backflow through the plumbing system.
- Oxidize or Oxidation: To undergo a chemical reaction with oxygen. Generally a destructive process.
- Ozone Gas or Ozone: A colorless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties. Safe for pools and spas, as it is injected directly into the water in small amounts. Formed when 2 oxygen molecules are converted in to 3 oxygen molecules by electrical discharge or ultraviolet light.
- Ozone Generator: Mechanical device capable of producing ozone gas to be injected into plumbing lines of a pool or spa for the purpose of oxidizing contaminants in the water.
- Static Pressure: In a plumbing system for a pool or spa, can be defined as pressure exerted on the plumbing system when no pumps are running. Static pressure can cause backflow if a high volume of water is at a higher elevation than the rest of the system. Water will always try to equalize. Hartford Loops and/or check valves can help to eliminate backflow during high static pressure conditions.
- Ultraviolet Ozone or UV: Type of process that uses an ultraviolet light to convert oxygen molecules into ozone gas for pools and spas.
- Venturi: A venturi is created when a narrow piece of tubing or plumbing is placed between two larger diameter pieces of plumbing. If the smaller tubing or plumbing also contains a 3rd port, a suction effect can be achieved on that 3rd port.
