Glossary
- Cap: Caps act as protective devices and are designed to protect pipe ends or to end a plumbing section or manifold. Caps are Female and will attach to either a piece of pipe or a Spigot (Male) fitting.
- Check Valve or CV: A valve or fitting designed to allow water or air to flow in one direction only. Can prevent backflow through the plumbing.
- Coupler or Coupling: Plumbing fitting designed to join two sections or pipe together. Couplers will generally have smooth female sockets on both sides.
- CPVC or Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride: CPVC is a plastic pressure piping system. Similar to PVC, however can handle higher-temperature water. CPVC is generally resistant to corrosion, tuberculation, deposits, chlorine and chloramines.
- Elbow: Plumbing fitting designed to join two sections or pipes together at an angle. Elbows are available with smooth female sockets, male spigot, female or male threaded connections, or any combination of each. Available in 90, 45, and 22.5-degree angles, and in all standard sizes.
- Fitting Extender or Overfitting, Outside Fitting Extender: Fitting designed to connect over the outside of a plumbing fitting such as a 90-degree elbow or coupling. This fitting will not restrict flow like an inside fitting or pipe extender.
- Pipe Extender: Type of plumbing fitting designed to fit inside a pipe on one side, and provide an extension of the pipe on the other side. As this is an inside fitting, it must be mentioned that inside fittings can reduce the flow capabilities of plumbing and should only be used in situations where proper repairs are not possible or extremely difficult.
- Plug: Type of plumbing fitting designed to end a section of plumbing or manifold. A plug is similar to a cap, however, it is a male ending instead of a female. It's designed to fit into the end of tubing, piping, or a female plumbing fitting.
- PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride: Flexible, and plastic-like in appearance. The material commonly used to produce pipes and fittings for plumbing.
- Slip or Socket, S, Female Slip: Slip refers to a type of PVC plumbing connection. A slip is a “female socket” fitting, meaning that there is no threading. This is typically a glued connection when the Male (Spigot) fitting or pipe is inserted into the Female (Slip) (Exp. 2” S Coupling or 90-degree elbow)
- SPG or Spigot: Spigot refers to a type of PVC plumbing connection. A spigot is a “male slip” fitting, meaning that there is no threading. This is typically a glued connection when the Male (Spigot) fitting or pipe is inserted into the Female (Slip). (Exp. 1-1/2” SPG Coupling or 45-degree elbow)
- Street or Street Elbow, ST: Type of plumbing fitting designed to join 2 pieces of pipe together. One side will be female, the other side male. Can be found in different types of fittings such as 45-degree elbows, Tee's and 90-degree elbows.
- Sweep or Sweep Elbow: Type of elbow plumbing fitting. The Sweep accomplishes its angle more gradually than a simple fitting. This will allow less resistance in the plumbing and greater flow capability.
- VGB or Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act: is a United States law named after Virginia Graeme Baker, who died after sustaining a pool suction-drain injury in June 2002, when the suction from a spa drain entrapped her under the water. It is incorporated as Title 14 of the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA Title 14, Pub.L. 110-140). This act became enforceable law on December 19, 2008. The Law is Designed to update safety standards of Pool and Spa Filtration Systems and construction, in an attempt to stop entrapment injuries, drownings, and deaths.
- Wall fitting: Type of plumbing fitting that is permanently attached to a structure and can recieve plumbing connections. In the Spa Industry, a wall fitting will typically be 3 pieces (flange, nut, and gasket). The fitting will go through a specially sized hole in a wall of floor and be secured with a nut on the outside.
- Wye: Wye is a fitting solution that has three openings connected to each other (at a 45° angle). It is Y-shaped and helps join three pipelines together.
