Glossary
- Buttress Thread (Unions) or Union Thread: Type of thread used for pump connection plumbing unions. Buttress threading measures larger than Standard measurements such as National Pipe Thread and will not reflect the actual physical measurement (Exp. 2" Buttress Thread measures 3" diameter.)
- FBT or Female Buttress Thread: Female connection, See "Buttress Thread"
- FPT or Female Pipe Thread: Female Connection, See "NPT Pipe Thread"
- Gasket or Tailpiece Gasket, Heater O-Ring: Round rubber gasket installed between heater flange and plumbing tailpiece. Can be flat or flat with raised rib.
- MBT or Male Buttress Thread: Male connection, See “Buttress Thread”
- MPT or Male Pipe Thread: Male Connection, See "NPT Pipe Thread"
- NPT or National Pipe Thread: U.S. national technical standards for screw threads used on threaded pipes and pipe fittings. This is the most common threading used in the United States.
- Nut: Female threaded component of a union. Attaches to male threaded tailpiece to seal plumbing connections.
- O-Ring or Cord O-ring: Black cord o-ring used to seal between a variety of connections such as plumbing, pump housings, jet components, etc.
- PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride: Flexible, and plastic-like in appearance. The material commonly used to produce pipes and fittings for plumbing.
- Split Nut Union or Nut, Repair Union: Female threaded component of a union. Nut is split into 2 halves for installation. Each half is attached to each other by small screws. Can be purchased in 1" - 3" sizes.
- Tail Piece or Union Tail Piece: Male Buttress thread on one side for the heater union, and any variety of PVC or barb connection on the other side for plumbing. Available in many different sizes and connection types. Can be used for high-flow and select low-flow systems.
- Union: Type of plumbing fitting designed to join 2 pieces of pipe together, or a pipe to the flange of a pump or heater. Can be attached or detached without harm to the plumbing. Generally will need a gasket or o-ring to seal the connection.
