Hot Tubs and Spas run on electricity. There are alternative methods to heating a hot tub, however, electric heaters are the preferred method of spa and hot tub manufacturers.

The 2 most common types are High Flow and Low Flow.

High flow spa and hot tub heaters

Type of electric heater used in hot tubs and spas that have a either a dedicated full sized single or dual speed jet pump for circulation.

Requires 1.5” – 2” plumbing.

Connects to plumbing via split nut unions with gaskets.

Require a minimum of 25 GPM to operate.

Contains a heating element made from steel or titanium.

May include sensors, high limit cradle, mounting studs, pressure switch etc.

Can be mounted to a control system, or in some cases remotely installed.

Find your high flow heater

Most High Flow Heaters will share the same general anatomy, here are some examples of common items found on a High Flo Spa Heater.

1 - Mounting Studs of a high flow spa and hot tub heater

Secures the heater to the Control Box.

2 - Element Connections

Normally constructed with a stainless-steel housing. (Fig.2)

3 - Plumbing Tail Piece

Standard plumbing connection to provide water flow through heater.

4 - Split Nut Union

Replaceable threaded nut that secures the plumbing tail piece to the heater.

5 - High Limit Cradle

Insulated plate or cover to secure high limit sensor to heater body, providing protection from ambient temperatures and allowing sensor to have direct contact with heater body.

6 - Pressure Tap

Female Threaded hole to allow the installation of an 1/8” NPT pressure switch, or sensor mount.  Tap stays plugged if not in use.

Low flow spa and hot tub heaters

Type of electric heater used in hot tubs and spas that use a dedicated low flow single speed circulation pump.

Uses ¾” or 1” vinyl tubing for the plumbing.

Connects to plumbing via barbed fittings with clamps.

Requires a minimum of 10 GPM to operate.

Contains a heating element made from steel or titanium.

May include sensors, high limit cradle, flow switch, or pressure switch etc.

Can be mounted to a control system, or remotely installed.

Grab your Low Flow Heater

Most Low Flow Heaters will share the same general anatomy, here are some examples of common items found on a Low Flo Spa Heater.

1 - Mounting Studs

Secures the heater to the Control Box. (Select Models)

2 - Element Wiring Connections

Connects the heater to the control pack or circuit board (Provides power to the heater)

3 - Ribbed Barbed or Smooth Barbed Plumbing Connections

Vinyl tubing plumbing connection to provide water flow through heater.(In some cases Flex PVC is used with standard plumbing).

4 - High Limit Cradle

nsulated plate or cover to secure high limit sensor to heater body, providing protection from ambient temperatures and allowing sensor to have direct contact with heater body.

5 - Flow Or Pressure Switch

Low Flow Heaters will use either a Flow Switch (in the plumbing), or a pressure switch (attached to heater) to register flow to the control system and allow the heater to engage
