Your hot tub should be drained and cleaned every 3 to 4 months. As a result, body oils, cosmetics, and other bodily fluids accumulate in the water over time. The more hot tub chemicals (read more) you add, the more this builds up, leading your sanitizers to stop working. Removing build-up while also caring for your hot tub's surfaces is easy. You don't need a chemistry degree to do it. Keep reading to learn how to empty and clean your hot tub properly before changing the water.

Are hot tubs hard to maintain?

Maintaining a hot tub isn't that difficult once you know the basics. You should check the water levels weekly, add appropriate spa chemicals (read more), clean and change the hot tub filters monthly (read more), and replace the water every 3-4 months.

Why is hot tub cleaning important?

Soaking in an unclean hot tub exposes your body to various hazards such as skin irritation. Furthermore, failing to clean your spa may reduce functionality, forcing you to pay for hot tub repair services. Here are some of the threats associated with soaking in a filthy hot tub:

  • Irritation of the skin
  • Rashes
  • Infections caused by bacteria
  • Nausea (if ingested)

The entire system may suffer costly damage if your hot tub is left unattended for an extended period.

Which products can you use to clean your spa or hot tub?

After your tub has been completely drained, wipe away any sediment, filth, or debris from the surface with a moist cloth. We recommend using a surface cleaner, soft cloth, or scrubber to remove persistent markings from your hot tub without damaging it. Regular household cleaning agents are typically not pH balanced, so it's best to use hot tub cleaning products.

Here is a list of useful products to clean your hot tub: water testing kits, chemicals, cleaners, or scum removers.

How to clean your dirty hot tub water?

Even if your sanitizer levels are perfect, biofilm can form in your hot tub. Bacteria feeds on it, and it also serves as a protective barrier against your sanitizer.

Here are tips to clean your hot tub water:

Check the filter(s)

When you have a clarity issue, you should check your filters. If small particles aren’t picked up by the filters, you should rinse your filters and soak them overnight in a filter cleaner.

Check the water balance levels

You should check the PH of the water to see if it needs to be altered. It’s also important to make sure the sanitiser is at the right level. It should not be too high or too low (a common clarity problem can be caused by high sanitizer levels). Read more

Shock the spa

If your water is still dirty, you should use a non-chlorine shock or a shock water treatment to clear the water quickly without having to increase your sanitizer level too high.

Use a water clarifier

You can use a clarifier water treatment to get rid of small particles and clean your spa water.

Empty the spa

If none of the solutions above worked, you should drain your hot tub and start again with fresh water. Sometimes this is the best way to go, especially after a period of heavy usage.

How to change the water in a spa?

Follow these steps:

1

Turn off the hot tub.

2

Remove the filter and clean it.

3

Remove the water from the hot tub.

4

Clean your hot tub.

5

Fill the hot tub with water and return the hot tub to its original setting.

6

Add the appropriate amount of spa chemicals.

How to empty your spa or hot tub?

Most hot tubs include a water outlet, which you can use to drain the water. Don't worry if you don't have one. You can use a submersible pump to empty it. The submersible pump will discharge the spa water while the hot tub fills, and the water in the footwell should become fresh after 10 minutes. Simply put, you'll be pumping new water in a while, pushing old water out. Please be cautious about where you dispose of the water, especially if you live near a river or stream.

The best way to clean your spa or hot tub

You might want to give your hot tub shell a quick scrub once it's empty. Be sure to use specific spa cleaning products such as a shell cleaner or a waterline and tile cleaner. You can use a scum scrubber to eliminate any remaining waterline build-up.

How to maintain a spa or hot tub?

  • 2 to 4 times per week, check and adjust the water balance in your spa.
  • Replace the spa filter cartridge every season and clean it every 1 or 2 weeks.
  • Drain and refill the hot tub and spa every 3 to 4 months to keep it clean.
  • Twice a week, air out the spa and hot tub cover to remove foul odors beneath the spa lid.
  •  To maintain the spa filled, add water as needed.

How to get rid of scum in your spa and hot tub water?

Hot tub and spa water can become dirty or undesirable at times. The general rule is that you should change the water when the water is dirty, a practice that (under normal circumstances) should be done consistently every 90 days. In between water changes, occasionally, scum can accumulate at the waterline. As long as there is no chemical problem or any contaminants in the water, using a scum control product can help keep water sparkling clean between water changes. Scum balls float in your spa or pool to absorb body oils, scum & lotion residues.

What causes scum in your spa and hot tub water?

Some of the contaminants that end up in hot tub water are filtered out. Depending on your filter, you can filter out dust, dirt, chemicals, and even pathogens. However, a hot tub filter can only accomplish so much for so long. If impurities in your hot tub aren't removed quickly enough, a layer of hot tub scum floats on the water's surface, or an unpleasant scum ring around the hot tub shell will form.

What is a scum control product?

A scum control product is a scumball floating on your spa water to absorb body oils, inanimate scum, and lotion residues. It is chemical-free and offers the following benefits:

  • Ph is easier maintained
  • Foam and scum lines in spas and hot tubs are eliminated
  • Dead bacteria-laden skin is removed
Scum control products and spa balls are ideal for individuals who want to ensure their hot tub or spa stays clean for longer. These useful cleaning tools make it simple for the hot tub water to remain clear because they absorb spa and hot tub oil scum residues from the water surface.

When to use a scum control product in your spa and hot tub water?

It would be best if you only used scumballs when: • Your tub is in between scheduled water changes.

  • No contaminants are present in the spa.
  • Chemical tests have concluded that all chemicals test within acceptable ranges.
  • Small amounts of scum have become visible near walls and the waterline.

When to replace your scum control product in your spa and hot tub water?

Due to its ability to completely absorb and eliminate microscopic impurities that frequently afflict hot tub water, hot tub owners love scum control products. Once oil-absorbing sponges have finished soaking up oil, removing them is crucial. If your spa or hot tub receives a lot of traffic, you may need to clean or replace your sponges more frequently, such as every few days. Be sure to replace your scum control product when:

  • The scum control product has become saturated and discolored.
  • The scumball starts to break apart into pieces.
  • The scumball has exceeded its recommended life cycle. Most are 1-3 months.
  • The product no longer collects scum.

How to clean a spa or hot tub scumball?

You can clean most hot tub sponges with soap and warm water. Avoid squeezing the sponge as you carefully take it from the water. They will release oil back into the tub if you press them while they are still immersed. Once you've got it out, squeeze as much oil out as you can before using one of the following techniques to wash the sponge thoroughly:

  • It should spend the night in a bowl or filter cleaner.
  • Submit it to the washing (spin cycle only, no heat drying).
  • Use a little dish soap when cleaning.
It needs detergent to get rid of any oil residue because water alone can't do it, but it's crucial to rinse it all afterward to avoid getting a frothy hot tub. The sponge should be clean and ready to use again in the tub.
