Overlays are special stickers that are placed on keypads.
Made of tougher materials such as vinyl, overlays include a self-adhesive backing. (Fig.1)

Overlay stickers contain manufacturer logos, buttons for spa control, and a clear open area for the display.
Overlays are always designed for a specific keypad and are generally never interchangeable. (Fig.2)

Some spa manufacturers will have special overlays made specifically for them from equipment manufacturers. These are proprietary to the spa builder and will usually have major differences from their generic counterparts. (Fig.3)

Proprietary overlays may have different key mapping, different logos, different number of buttons, and a completely different size and shape. (Fig.4)

Overlay stickers are generally not able to be safely exposed to outdoor elements and must remain under the protection of the spa cover when the hot tub is not in use. (Fig.5)

Overlay stickers can be purchased separately from a keypad in most cases. If the keypad is working properly, just hard to read or the overlay is cracking, replacing the overlay only can save you a lot of money.
